Leadville week has finally arrived, and it's do or die time. (Or is that do and die time).
I woke up early at my campsite in the National Forest, had a leisurely breakfast, and waited a while for the temperature to warm up before heading out to pre-ride the Powerline. I drove over to County Road 4 along Turquoise Lake, and parked at the start of the dirt road. I rode up the Sugarloaf climb, admiring the magnificent view, and then descended down Powerline. The descent was every bit as steep and rutted as I remember it from 8 years ago. I climbed back up Powerline, and it didn't seem as intimidating as I recall. It's probably because I was fresh, and not 75 miles into the race. I almost cleared the Powerline climb without having to walk, but I was feeling some effect from the elevation, and I did walk a little bit of it near the bottom.
I rode back down Sugarloaf and back to the car, sorry that I didn't bring my camera with me to take some pictures. I'm going to remember to bring it tomorrow, when I pre-ride Powerline a second time.
It was an overcast day, with temps mostly in the 60s, low 70s maybe. Those are the coolest temps that I have ridden in in several months. It didn't rain on me during my pre-ride, but it's been raining every day, I've been told. Please don't rain on raceday!
