I started out early in the morning, riding down the Tramway Trail to Central, to meet up with Anthony. It was pretty cold at the beginning, but it warmed up quickly as the sun rose up higher, and I started to get my riding legs going. I took off my full-fingered gloves and my head band as I waited a few minutes for Anthony to show up. He made his arrival, and we headed off into Tijeras Canyon.

I had my road bike for this ride but Anthony only has a mountain bike, and even though he has some skinny tires it was obvious early on that he was going to be working very hard. I let him set the pace, and he was killing himself. In just a couple of miles, he was sweating rivers. I felt bad for him, but there was nothing I could do. I wasn't pushing him to go fast, he's just that way.

We got through the canyon, and then we took a short break at the ranger station. We began the climb up to Raven Road, and I held back to try and give Anthony a break, but I could tell that he was suffering. He was also running short on time so at about Pine Flat, he turned back and headed for home. We said our good-byes, and he told me to try and catch up with him on the way back. I said that I would try, but I knew that it would be impossible. I was still more than three miles from the mailbox, and after I picked up the mail, I had to take some letters over to the renters. By the time I was heading downhill, Anthony would have been at least ten miles ahead of me. I don't think that Lance Armstrong could have made up that much distance.

On the way back to town I stopped for a break in the bushes and to enjoy the beautiful sunny day. It was a nice leisurely afternoon to be out for a bike ride.
