It's Memorial Weekend and I've been trying to get out for a ride. It wasn't looking good as there was a large black cloud hovering just to the north, and I didn't want to get rained on. The cloud started to break up so I got my bike ready to take out on the road and off I went. Then I noticed that there was a large black cloud just to the south. I decided to stay close to home and just ride around the neighborhood.
I was riding down Juniper Hill Road towards the Tram when I heard a very distinctive and frightening noise. On the side of the road about four feet away from me was a coiled up rattlesnake and he was making it very obvious that he did not like me riding by on my bicycle. As I rolled past him he tightened up his coil but he didn't make a strike. Phew!
I made the loop aroung the Tram and then went back up Juniper Hill, this time staying in the middle of the street. I looked for the snake as I went by but I didn't see him. Then I heard a little rattle coming from the other side of the street. Sure enough, he had crossed the street and was hanging out on a rock under a tree. I wasn't about to mess with him, but it was kind of cool to see one. That's the first rattlesnake that I have ever seen in my life. It will be okay with me if I don't see another for a long time.
I continued my ride of wandering through the neighborhood, eventually crossing over San Rafael and ending up at Simms Park Road. I looped up through the Elena Gallegos parking lot and then rode all the way to the trail along Tramway and back to the house.
It turned out to be nice afternoon for a ride. It didn't rain on me and the clouds helped keep things a little bit cool. Temps were in the low 80s.
