Bicycle Camping - Day 3!
We started off our day with a breakfast of oatmeal and trail mix, and then tore down the camp and packed up to leave. We had to walk up the steep singletrack to get back to our bikes and then pack our trailers and get back on the road. I don't know if I was was tired from the previous two days of riding or if the walk up the hill wore me out, or what, but I was feeling fatigued. My brain was telling my body, "Come on, let's go, you can do it," but my body couldn't do it. All I could do was settle into an easy pace and spin my way up the hills, and it sure seemed like there were a lot of hills. I guess that this day was payback for the downhills of the last two days, and the payback was major. I could not keep up with Don and Roger so I just let them go. Fortunately, they waited for me at the intersections to make sure that I wouldn't get lost. That was probably good thinking since I had the keys to the car.
At one point I was told that we were only about seven miles from the car. This turned out to be an under estimation by about three miles. I would rather have not known the distance than to have been given wrong distance. As I neared what I thought should have been the parking lot, I started to panic because there was no end in sight. Don and Roger were long gone and I was beginning to wonder if I might have made a wrong turn somewhere. Around every curve I was expecting to see the parking area, but all I saw was the road continuing to climb. I tried to remind myself that all climbs have a top, and this one would too, eventually, but I didn't feel very convinced. It was hot, I was sweaty, my water was running low, and my body was tired. I was beat.
Finally, just as I thought I couldn't take much more punishment, I saw the Jeep and Roger and Don waiting for me. We made it! Now, it was only a matter of putting everything back on the Jeep and hitting the road.
This was an awesome camping adventure. Nobody got hurt, everybody's equipment worked, and a good time was had playing around in forest. We are already talking about planning for our next trip.
