With the price of gasoline going way above three dollars per gallon I have worked out a plan to carpool to school with a gal named Carla who drives in every day from Edgewood. Today is my first day of class in Machine 5. I made it out of Machine 4 but now I have to go to school 4 days a week instead of 2. My plan is to ride my bike down to the ranger station where she will pick me up and give me a ride to school. This will also cause me to put a lot more miles on the bike and maybe get back into better physical condition.
Mondays and Wednesdays are early days because Carla has to be at class at 8:00 a.m. I had to meet her at the ranger station at 7:15 a.m. and I wasn't sure how long it would take me to get there with my heavy backpack and all my stuff, so I left very early, at 6:00 a.m. It was still mostly dark out and it was very cold, with temps in the teens. It took me 40 minutes to get there without really trying and that gave me time to lock up the bike, change shoes, and try to get warm. I'll leave the house a little bit later, next time.
After class she dropped me back off at the ranger station and it was time to get on the bike and ride up the mountain. My heave pack and all my gear made the climb very hard. I found myself standing up on the pedals often to try and stretch out my back muscles which were taking a beating. It took me an hour and forty minutes to get back to the house. That was very slow. I had my red mountain bike for this trip but I think that next time I will take my road bike. That should shave a few minutes off of the trip.
It was considerably warmer for the trip up the mountain compared to the early morning trip down. It had warmed up to the lower 50s. Not bad.
