I've been working on the weekends at the Sandia Peak Ski Area loading and unloading people and bicycles to and from the chairlift. It's been a lot of fun, but watching other people ride their bikes and have fun has made me want to do get in on some of that action. I brought my bike along to work so that I could take a little ride at the end of the day.
Once the chairlift was shut off I went back to the Jeep and pulled out the bike and set off for King of the Mountain trail. I wasn't going to try and ride all the way up to the top but I figured that halfway up would make for a nice ride. I began the climb to the sounds of chirping birds and my heavy breathing. I'm out of shape for this. I almost ran over a little snake who decided to cross the trail at a bad time. Luckily for him I was going up so I was able to slow down just enough to give him that extra second he needed to get out of the way.
I climbed about halfway up the mountain and then took a short break to enjoy enjoy the forest. I had enough daylight to continue climbing for awhile longer but I was at a place where I would have to do a little bit of walking so I decided that this was far enough for the day. The ride down fun and trail conditions are good. There are a few places that are a little bit loose because of trail work that was done, but mostly it's in excellent shape.
It was a very nice late afternoon with temps in the 70s.
