This is a summary of some of the highlights and lowlights of eight sweep rides that I have made at the end of the day at Sandia Peak over the last two weeks. Four of the sweeps were down Golden Eagle and four were down King of the Mountain.
Twice during the sweeps I had to go down in the rain. One time I was riding down Golden and the other time it was King. Both times it was horrible. The one on Golden was a huge mudfest. I had to stop several times and scrape mud away from my rear tire because it would't turn. The ride down King in the rain was just as bad. The trail down king is a lot rockier than Golden and the rocks and roots were very slippery. It was like trying to ride on ice cubes. King is also longer and it has some walking so it was torture. If there was anything good about riding in the rain it would be my raincoat. That thing worked great and I was so glad that I had it along. I was thinking that I don't remember how much I paid for the jacket, but whatever it was I should go back and give them some more money.
I thoroughly enjoyed the other six rides down the the mountain. Both trails are very beautiful and they are in very good condition. I saw deer on several different rides and several times on some rides. On one ride a hawk flew down right in front of me and led me down the trail for about a hundred yards. That was really cool.
