On the way to the Jemez Mountains there is a sign on the highway for a turnoff for the Ojito Wildernes and Bike Trails. I've always wanted to go there but never had the chance, until now.
I drove into town and met up with Jeff at his house and we went out to the Ojito Wilderness, which is also known as White Mesa. It's an area of very interesting and unusual geology. I want to come back and hike the area so that I can get a closer look at the place.
We did the loop in a clockwise direction which takes you through an area called the dragon's back. It's formed kind of like a spine with dropoffs on both sides. It's not for the faint of heart. One part traverses a steep hillside that you would not want to fall down on. You would receive some serious road rash before you came to a stop.
Jeff is a lot stronger of a rider than I am. I need to start working out if I ever want to try and hang with that guy. I had a lot of fun but I'm not sure about Jeff. He might not want to ride with me again, since I was such a slow poke. I understand.
It was a nice day for a ride. It was a little bit overcast which helped to keep the temperature reasonable, in the 80s.
