Sofie and I were going to meet Robert at Mars Court for a 9:00 a.m. ride, but it was so cold out that I called him up and we put the ride off until 10:00 a.m. That made a big difference. Instead of temps in the 30s to start the ride they were in the 40s.
Robert has a new bicycle that his brother gave him and he was eager to try it out. We looped around on the trails and found ourselves up on the ridge with a choice of two trails. I suggested the trail to the right which was easier and would take us back to the trailhead an easy way. Robert was feeling pretty good so he voted for taking the longer, more difficult route. We headed along the air force base boundary and there are some steep up and downs back in there. Robert struggled a little bit with some of that and before too long he was regretting his decision. This is how we learn.
I saw a big deer back in there that was bounding through the trees. Neither Robert nor Sofie saw him go sprinting by. We stopped a couple of times for Sofie to take a break and get a drink of water. The second time was at the cool tree with the low arms.
We eventually made it back to the trailhead. The day had warmed up to the upper 50s, but it never quite reached the point of being warm.
