I was getting ready to go for a bike ride with Sofie and I gave my rear tire a squeeze to see if it needed any air added to it before we left. I felt a bulge in the tire where my inner tube was pushing through a hole in the sidewall. A visual inspection showed a second bulge in a different spot where the sidewall had failed. I'm glad I discovered the problem before I left the house instead of on the trail. That could have been a real problem. I changed out the tire and we got in the car and drove to Pine Flat to go for a ride.
The Forest Service has done some trail work at Pine Flat but mostly what I noticed was new signage. There are still trails out there that are unmarked and need to be closed off, but it's a step in the right direction. We wandered around on Gambel Oak, and Poker Chip and Mahogany and some unnamed trails until we ended up at Oak Flat. On the way back I spotted a trail that I had never seen before and it led us to a picnic table with a geocache and a truly amazing view. I will return with my camera because it is one of the most beautiful spots that I have ever seen, anywhere in the forest. There was a book in the cache box and I wrote in it that "Sofie is the best dog, ever!"
We left the picnic table and continued on the new trail until it came out on Oak Flat Road, not far from the highway 337. We went back to the picnic table and then headed back down to Pine Flat. We were on Dead Man Trail and that took us back to the trailhead where we had parked. The sky had grown very dark with the formation of some gigantic, black clouds, but thankfully, it didn't rain on us.
It was a hot afternoon with temps in the mid 80s. Sofie and I stopped every couple of miles so that she could rest a little bit and get a drink of water.
