There was one trail on the west side of 337 that I had never ridden on, so I decided that this was the ride to finally do it. I had ridden past the West Ridge trail but I had never climbed it. I put my bike and Sofie in the car and we headed down to Otero Canyon and started our ride from there.
We headed up the canyon and then climbed up the West Ridge trail. As the name implies it climbs west up to the ridge and then heads north towards Tunnel Canyon. The trail is laid out very well making the climb doable without having any really steep spots. We took a water break up on the ridge and then continued on Bird House trail, all the way to the Tunnel Canyon trailhead. From there we made the climb back up to Otero where we had parked.
It was a partly cloudy day with temps around 70 degrees. Lots of wildflowers were blooming, especially the small yellow and purple ones. There were barrel cactus that were also in bloom with their very pretty orange flowers and red flowers. Even a few yucca plants were starting to put out their showy flowers. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful ride. Excellent!
When we got back to the house Sofie was limping around a little bit and my wife was giving me a hard time about being too rough on the dog. I was petting her that evening and I found a cactus needle that was sticking in one of her legs and when I pulled it out she was very happy. She started running around and giving me kisses. Her limping went away after that.
