I left the house a few minutes after 8:00 in the morning and it was still a little bit cool out with temps about 50 degrees. When I got out on the highway I realized that I had forgotten my music. Oh, well. At least I was able to hear a lot more of the birds singing.
I cruised down to the freeway and then through Cedar Crest. I skipped my usual break at the Y and headed straight up for Capulin. Just before I reached Capulin a couple of guys passed me, and then while I was taking my break a couple more rode by. The weather is getting nicer and more riders are out taking advantage of it.
After a few minutes of a PowerBar break I got back on the bike and finished the climb to the top. The wind was blowing pretty good at times and that combined with a temperature of 53 degrees at the top made for some cool riding. There was a large gathering of German tourists on motorcycles at the top who were taking group photos. The looked like they were having fun. I rested up for a few minutes and then put on my windbreaker and headed down the mountain.
The ride down was a fight against the wind. Very strong gusts of wind were blowing up the mountain and I had to hang on tight to my handlebars. I stopped at the gas station just long enough to take off my jacket and stash it away in my bakcpack. The ride up mailbox hill was a fight against some powerful gusts of wind. They probably were more than 40 miles an hour. I wanted to get a hamburger or burrito at Shannon the ski patrol lady's place who had a grill at the Phillips 66 station, but wouldn't you know it - she was out of business. I got some water while I was there and then I headed towards home.
At the bottom of 337 I stopped in at the Pedaler's Cafe to see if it was any different from when it was the Roadside Attraction. The inside had a bit of a bicycle motif to it but it wasn't much different. They did have a couple of items on the menu that were freshly heated up so I decided to try a breakfast bagel. It had egg and bacon and cheese. It wasn't bad. I needed the energy for the climb back up the hill to the house.
It was a mostly sunny day with temps getting up to about 85 degrees. Very nice.
