I left the house right at 8:00 a.m. It was cool still, but I didn't need a jacket so it wasn't too bad. It warmed up quickly as I descended 337. There was a little bit of a headwind as I rode down the hill but it was gone by the time I got to the bottom and it never came back.

I cruised through Cedar Crest and then stopped at my break spot and ate a PowerBar. After a short break I began the long climb to the top. Since it was mid-week there wasn't much traffic or many other riders. I only got passed by a couple of guys on the way up. I struggled a bit on this climb and I gladly stopped at Capulin for another break. The rest did me good and pretty soon I was back on my bike and climbing again.

There has been a lot of rain in the mountains and the high elevations are green and lush. It was very beautiful being up there. The sky was a mixture of sun and clouds and I was thoroughly enjoying the ride, even as I was struggling. It was 62 degrees at the top and I stopped just long enough to eat two chocolate chip cookies and then I was heading down the mountain. Most of the highway has been repaved this year so the ride down was smooth as silk.

I stopped at the gas station at the bottom to fill up on water and then I was back on the road. I went back through Cedar Crest and then I was ready for the climb back up 337. I seemed to get a second wind for the climb and I was gaining strength as I went up. Maybe it was the "back to the barn" syndrome that had me fired up as I headed for home. Whatever it was, it sure felt good!
