I left the house just after 8:00 a.m. and headed down the mountain. Temps were in the 50s and there was a bit of a headwind as I descended down 337.
I rode to the Y and took my usual break. After a few minutes I was headed up the mountain. I felt like I was keeping up a pretty decent pace, at least until I got to Capulin and took another break. After that I felt like I lost some energy and rode at a slower pace. The elevation can have something to do with that. Overall, I managed to finish this ride about 15 minutes ahead of last month's ride. That's a good thing.
I left Capulin and continued my journey to the top. Eventually, I rolled into the parking lot and headed for the snack bar. I went inside and bought two cookies, but I couldn't wash them down because I ran out of water. They were still very delicious.
I finished the cookies and then headed out the door. The ride down was chilly when I was in the shade but nice in the sunshine. It was 62 degrees at the top and mid 80s at the bottom. It felt just right. I watered up in the gas station and then I was back on the bike and headed for home.
I rode through Cedar Crest and then started the climb back up 337 feeling good. As I approached Tunnel Canyon my wheel slipped off of the road and it caused a flat tire. Now I wasn't feeling as good. In the process of changing out the tire I found a metal staple sticking through the casing in two places. I got that out of there and aired up my spare tube and I was headed for the finish line.
