I have been having "issues" for the last couple of months in getting my rides written down. This happens periodically and I somehow work my way through it. This seems to be another one of those cycles but I feel like I'm on the upswing.
I may have caused some permanent damage to my knee on my last ride when I got a cramp during my first attempt up the mountain. My knee has experienced some pain and a feeling of looseness that it never had before. I'm hoping that it's only temporary but I'm fearing that it's a sign of getting older. I can't go on forever -- but I can try!
I headed out around 8:00 a.m. with the idea of taking it easy and trying to survive. The "Streak" is on the line and I have to keep it going. Temps were in the upper 40s when I started out and it would warm up to very nice upper 70s. I cruised down 337 and through Cedar Crest and took a longer than usual break at the Y. I made certain that I felt well rested before heading out.
On the way up to Capulin I saw a small snake that was crossing the road. I stopped to make sure that he made it all the way across. I continued up to Capulin and took my second break and then headed for the top. My progress was soon to be delayed by the road construction resurfacing project that has returned to the crest highway. I had to to wait for at least 15 minutes before a lead car came and everyone got to continue. It took me a long time to climb through the road work but no other cars came up that would cause me to have to get out of the way. I think there were some people that had to wait for a lot longer time than I did.
I made it to the top where I took a short cookie break and then headed for the bottom. I was forced to stop again at the road construction for about 20 minutes. I talked to the flag guys each time while I waited for the lead car. I think that everyone was bored from standing around. Finally, we were moving again and I was heading for the bottom. A little ways below the ski are there were six turkeys in the road. One of them walked right toward me and nearly made me swerve to avoid hitting him. That was pretty cool.
I skipped the Shell station and went instead to the 66 station. An email has been going around how the owners were concerned when bees started drinking from their soda machine and they took steps to safely relocate the bees. I stopped in to fill up on water and give them some support. Unfortunately, the prices seemed high and there was a creepy feeling about the place. I may give them another try in a couple months.
I stopped long enough to consume a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and then I was heading for home. I felt a sense of relief as I neared the top of the climb of 337 back to Raven Road. Just before my driveway there was a horned toad that was crossing the road. I made sure that he got to the other side before I turned into the house.
It took two tries this month to get the crest ride done. That's why I like to go early in the month. That way, if something goes wrong and I can't make it I have time to give it another try. It's been working so far, for 130 months in a row!
