Sofie and I left the house and headed to Mars Court and then to Joe's house. This time we managed to get there without going down the wrong trail. Joe lives behind the pit off of 337 and the plan was to get there early enough so that we would have plenty of daylight to hike up to the pit and do some exploring.

Joe led the way across his neighbor's property and passed a house that he built and then sold. I asked him why he didn't keep the house and live in it, and he said that he had to sell it to pay his parents back the money they loaned him to build it. Go figure.

To get to the pit we had to climb up a little bit of an embankment which posed a challenge for Joe. He's 73 years old and he smokes nonfilter Pall Mall cigarettes. Sofie and I scouted out a way that looked doable and after a few minutes we were all looking around at the excavation. Joe said that they mine a special kind of clay out of the pit which is used to make bricks. It's a fairly small-scale operation. It was interesting to see the pit a little bit closer up than just driving by on the highway. I'd like to come back and explore it a little further, but today was not the day for that.

After about an hour of wandering around and listening to Joe talk about the history of the neighborhood, we headed back to his house. Sofie took a big drink of water and then we headed back through the forest to Mars Court.

It was a beautiful, sunny day, with temps around 50. Perfect for getting out and getting a little exercise.
