I left the house a little bit before 8:00 a.m. with temps in the low 40s. As I headed down 337 the temperature seemed to noticeably drop to around the mid 30s at Pine Flat, and it stayed cooler until I got down below Otero Canyon. After that it was back into the 40s and then into the 50s by the time I was passing through Cedar Crest.

I took my break at the Y and then I headed up the mountain. There was quite a bit of traffic heading up the highway because it's Balloon Fiesta and there are lots of tourists in town. I didn't mind because it was a pretty day to be in the mountains with a few, intermittent gusts of wind.

I climbed up to Capulin and as I turned in to take a break at a picnic table I saw a golden eagle flying around. He landed in a tree just across the road and I watched him for a couple of minutes as I took off my pack and helmet and got out a PowerBar. Psychologically, I used that bird to help give me strength.

I finished the climb to the top where it was very busy. I rested for a few minutes, checked the temp which was 43 degrees, and then I headed down. I put on my headband for the descent and tucked in and zipped up. The first few miles were cold, as usual, but it warmed up nicely below the ski area. I filled up on water at the gas station and then I headed for home.

Temps were in the low 60s as I rode back through Cedar Crest. The climb back up 337 was a bit of a grind but I made it. Another trip to the Crest is complete and I can relax for the rest of the month.
