I did some work this morning, and I had plans for a leisurely ride in the afternoon, and then an attempt on the crest, tomorrow morning, but neighbor Don called, and everything changed. He wanted to come up to the house tomorrow, and ride in the forest, so I had to either attempt the crest today, or wait until next weekend, which would only give me one more shot at keeping the streak alive in September. I decided to climb to the crest, today.

I'm still fighting off a cold, so I decided to take things easy, and not work up too much of a sweat. This was my latest start ever, at attempting to reach the summit. It was 2:30 in the afternoon, before, I left the house. I cruised down the mountain, and then through Cedar Crest, and took a break at my rest spot. I began the big ascent, dressed fairly warmly, as it was a cool day, and very soon, I was sweating rivers. I wasn't overheating, so I continued to climb at a steady pace.

Just above the ski area, a sheriff was there to close the road, as there was a skateboarding race going on. I couldn't believe it! Now I had to stand around and get cold, and also, I was going to run out of daylight for the trip back up to the house. I brought my light with me, just in case, but I didn't want to have to use it. Oh well... I took a picture while I was waiting.

After about 20 minutes, the road opened, and I continued my efforts to make it to the top. Temps were falling faster than the sun, and it was an even 32 degrees, when I finally got up there. I didn't stick around very long, just long enough to scarf down a power bar, put on my winter gloves and headband, and high tail it out of there. I didn't stop until I was at the ranger station in Tijeras, to get more water, and take off some clothes.

I put my headlight on for the climb up the highway, as it was fully dark by then. I was very happy to make it back to the house, having successfully completely my streak ride, for the 21st month in a row.
